Obituary For Rev. Etienne Siffert,SM

Fr. Siffert was born Feb 21, 1931, Paris, France. His father was Maurice Siffert and mother was Elise Limoges.
He went to St. Paul’s Parochial school, Sannois, 1936-1940, St. Joseph’s Marist school, Montlucon, 1941-1946, High School – Notre Dame’s Marist School, Bury, 1947-1949, College – Notre Dame’s Marist School, Enghien-les-Bains. He went to Novitiate-La Neyliere, 1950-1951. Professed a Marist October 21, 1951. He took his philosophy at Le Rosaire, Sainte Foy-Les Lyon. Took his theology at Le Grand Roule, Sainte-Foy-Les Lyon,1955-1958. He was ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1958 by Bishop Jacques Menager, Bishop of Versailles. He did his military service to France before he went to Novitiate. He went to Catholic University at Lyon-Propedeutique from 1952 to1953 and received certificates in Latin & Greek and a philosophy certificate at the Sorbonne University, 1958-1959. He received his teaching license in 1959-1960. He taught at Greek & Latin at various Marist high schools until 1969. He then went to the missions in the South Pacific, Wallis and Futuna, where he was the superintendent of schools from 1969 to 1973. In 1975, Fr. Siffert left Wallis and came to San Francisco, California to Notre Dame des Victoires as an associate pastor. He did not speak any English when he arrived. He was associate pastor from 1975 to1983. He became pastor from 1983 to1991. He became the associate pastor again from 1991 to 1992 and pastor again in 1993 until 2003. Again he was associate pastor from 2004 to 2008. He retired to Marist Center in 2017. He broke his hip in June of 2022. He then went to Mercy Convalescent in Oakland for rehabilitation and the remained in critical care until the died Sept 28, 2026. The Marists are very grateful for the excellent care he received during his stay at Mercy Convalescent in the critical care section.

Friends may call Wednesday, October 14 after 2pm at DUGGAN’S FUNERAL SERVICE, 3434-17th St nr Valencia where the Vigil will be held at 7pm. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Notre Dames des Victoires on October 31st at 10:30 am. Private Committal, Holy Cross Cemetery.
