Seamus Gavney, a family man, respected businessman, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the age of 97.

Born on June 3, 1929, in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland, Seamus grew up there with his brother Dan, developing a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and community. In 1959, he and his beloved wife, Marie, immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, where they began their married life and started their family. They later made San Francisco their home, settling in the Sunset District, where they built a lifetime of memories together. Marie preceded him in death, but her love remained with him always.

For decades, Seamus was the familiar face of Emerald Auto at 12th Avenue and Judah Street. Known throughout the Sunset District for his tireless work ethic, quick wit, and warm smile, he became much more than a businessman—he was a trusted friend to generations of customers and neighbors. Seamus had a gift for making people feel welcome, and his kindness and humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Outside of work, Seamus loved fishing, especially salmon fishing. One of his greatest joys was his annual Father’s Day fishing trip aboard the Hog Heaven with Captain Sean, a tradition he proudly kept for 25 years. He was also an avid soccer fan and never missed the chance to cheer on a match. If there was music playing, Seamus was equally happy to be out on the dance floor, sharing his love of dancing with family and friends.

His greatest pride, however, was his family. Seamus is survived by his sons, Jim (Joan), Kevin (Lisa), Garry (Kathleen), Michael (Andrea), Peter (Aine), and Gerard (Hester); his ten grandchildren, Megan (Kevin), Daniel (Tara), Stephen, Kevin, Scott, Shane, Brooke, Connor, Naomi, and Ryan; and his three great-grandchildren, Mia, Owen, and Lily.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Church, 1555 39th Avenue, San Francisco. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose generosity, humor, faith, and love for family enriched the lives of all who knew him.

May he rest in eternal peace.
