Katherine Scanlon Obituary

Katherine Ann Scanlon, dearly beloved wife of the late Mike, beloved mother of Joannie (Francie) O’Leary, Patricia (the late Jack) Culhane, the late Michael Scanlon, and proud and loving Nannie to Jennifer Culhane, Michael (Angie Palce) Culhane, Nicholas (Danielle Miller) Culhane and Rosie Culhane (grandog) passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side.
Katherine was born in San Francisco to the late Paddy and May Mahoney, she was the loving sister of Mary Ellen (James) Manley, and sister-in-law to Mary (Pat) Hanley. Cherished aunt of Pat (Laura) Hanley, Dan (Donna) Hanley, Kathy (the late Mark) Ahumada, the late Jimmy Manley, and Nora (PJ) Fox.
To help support her family in the early years of her marriage Katherine delighted in her babysitting career and served as loving Godmother to many. She was a dedicated lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish where she volunteered both at church and the school. She had a special devotion to and cared for the Infant of Prague as a member of the Altar Society. In her later years she was slowed down by macular degeneration but that and other challenges in her life didn’t stop her and her faith never faltered. She made many dear friends over the years in her Parish, her neighborhood and the Irish community.
Katherine delighted in participating in her grandchildren's activities and traveling to England and Ireland to attend family celebrations.
The family is very grateful to Dr. Frank Charlton, Dr. Jumper, Dr. Van Warmerdam, Dr. Groeger, Dr. Do, Dr. Bao Tran, and Dr. Podolin for the many years of excellent care; as well as the first responders and the medical team at St. Mary’s hospital for the compassionate care received.
Grateful thanks are extended to her caregivers Rosaleen McDaid, Sheila Purcell, Pat and Eileen Moore, and Margaret Dillon; and to Father Brendan McBride for his Pastoral care.
Friends may visit Wednesday January 15 at Duggan-Welch Mortuary 3434 17th Street, San Francisco for a vigil service from 5-7 pm with the Rosary at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church 1025 Masonic Ave on Thursday January 16th at 10:30 am followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to be made to St. Agnes Parish, San Francisco, the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center Active Retirement or the charity of your choice.
