James (Jimmy) Kavanagh passed away suddenly in San Francisco on March 16, 2021. Born on August 17, 1965 in Aughnamauleen, Gorey, Co. Wexford, Jimmy is survived by his wife, Carmel, and children Aidan and Rachel in San Francisco, and by his five brothers (Ben, Martin, Stephen, Peter, and Paddy) in Ireland.
He is deeply regretted by his mother in law (Mary Kierse), sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, and his many relatives and friends both here in the Bay Area as well as at home in Ireland.
Jimmy moved to San Francisco in 1985 and worked as a plumber before earning his contractor’s license. He built a career developing properties and in later years, managing several of these properties around the city.
In 2002, Jimmy married Carmel (nee Kierse) from Ennis, Co Clare and together they had two wonderful children Aidan (17) and Rachel (14). As the kids were growing, both Jimmy and Carmel were very engaged in their activities, and were regular and generous supporters of St Philip’s School’s sporting and fundraising activities. Jimmy coached Rachel’s soccer team and encouraged Aidan’s handball career, driving them to games and cheering on from the sidelines.
In recent years as the family grew, Jimmy developed a passion for running marathons and biking around the Bay Area. If you met Jimmy in the morning, he would often have already done a 10K run by the time you were getting your first coffee!
Friends may call on Monday, March 22 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Duggan’s Funeral Service, 3434 17th Street, and are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Tuesday, March 23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 725 Diamond Street. Jimmy will be returned to his native Co. Wexford for burial.
The Funeral Mass will be livestreamed and can be accessed using this link. The link will go live at 10.15 a.m. (PST) Tuesday morning.
