Love, family, friendship — Francis Xavier “F.X.” Crowley loved us and told us so every single day — his adoring wife, Nancy, four devoted and beautiful children, Gillian (William), Bobby (Rebecca), Kerry (Rachel), and Margaret; his granddaughter Peyton, and soon-to-be grandson, Xavier. He leaves behind his beloved brother Joe (Mary), loving sisters Kelly Fuller (Chuck), and Tara Chase (Steve), cherished sister-in-law Charlene, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother John P., sister Mary Frances, and parents Geraldine and John F. Crowley.
When F.X. wasn’t spending time with his family, he was asking about yours. We can’t imagine starting our day without him —discussing our plans, listening to his words of support and encouragement, and sharing his signature chicken marsala, homemade mashed potatoes, and crunchy garlic bread at dinner.
We will miss his endearing smile, his joy-filled laughter, the twinkle in his blue green eyes. His integrity, honesty, and endless generosity. His boisterous phone calls (always on speaker phone) to his extensive network of family, friends and colleagues, offering to help, defend, and advocate for others.
F.X. loved coffee at Roc’s cafe with the boys, dog walks at Stern Grove with his family, and bicycle rides through Golden Gate Park with Nancy. He treasured his weekly Calamari lunches with friends, vacations in Tahoe, and his daily 5 a.m. workouts. He was a third generation San Franciscan, member of the St. Ignatius Class of 1977, and the Wildcats’ starting varsity linebacker and two-year letterman. He graduated from Long Beach State in 1982.
F.X. enjoyed a fulfilling career in organized labor, attaining IATSE journeyman status in 1984. He was elected to seven consecutive terms as the head of IATSE Local 16 and finished his career as the business agent for IATSE Local 119. He served in solidarity on the SF Labor Council executive board for more than 25 years and organized Catholic Labor breakfasts over two decades. He performed valuable service to San Francisco, serving on three commissions including Civil Service, Port, and the SFPUC across 15 years. F.X. was rightfully proud of his professional accomplishments but often said that no one at the end of life wished they had spent more time at the office.
Words cannot express how grateful and privileged we feel to have lived with, laughed with and loved F.X. Crowley, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and leader. Our family is truly blessed.
