Dorothy Crawford Obituary

Dorothy Louise Crawford was born to parents Anna Mae and Joe Henry Sr. on March 28th, 1932, in Homer, Louisiana. She was the ninth in a line of ten children and the baby girl. Dorothy grew up in Homer where she accepted Christ at an early age. She attended Homer High School and Grambling University.

Dorothy met Alonzo Crawford and the two were married in 1952. After relocating to San Francisco, California, they bore four children (Jerome, Debra, Sheila, and Keith). Dorothy joined Missionary Temple CME in San Francisco, where she was an active member and served on the Usher Board for many years. She especially enjoyed participating in their annual Mammoth Tea. She remained a faithful member until her death.

Dorothy worked at UCSF hospital as a Nurse’s Assistant, where she cared for hundreds of new mothers in the Obstetrics department before retiring after thirty-two years. Once retired from UCSF, she went on to care for elderly patients for fifteen years before permanently retiring in 2005.

Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She a had a beautiful, joyous spirit and an infectious smile. She touched the lives of everyone who was lucky enough to cross paths with her. She could often be seen sitting in her front window, interacting with everyone who passed by. Dorothy loved to watch sports and could often be heard yelling excitedly at her television screen whenever the Forty Niners or Warriors played. For decades she was a season ticket holder at the famed Candlestick Park.  She also loved to dance and took any and every opportunity to do so. She loved her grandchildren and especially her great grandchildren. She was so proud of them and would always tell stories of their accomplishments.  She will be missed by all.

Dorothy was preceded in death by both her parents, her seven brothers (Elgin, Willie D., Joe Jr., Carl, Louis T., Llewellyn, and John D.), two sisters (Lula B. and Ruth), her husband, Alonzo, her daughter, Debra, and her granddaughter Brittany Crawford. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her three children, Jerome D. Crawford Sr. of Sacramento, CA, Sheila of Rio Vista, Ca, and Keith Crawford of San Francisco, CA. Daughter-in-law, Lenore Crawford and son in-law, James Bender. Eight Grandchildren: Tanika Crawford, Jerome D. Crawford Jr. (Heather), Ilia Golden, Abeni Bender, Franeisha Johnson (Albert), Imani Crawford, and Ezekiel Crawford. Six great-grandchildren: Jerome A. Crawford, Debari Augustine, Jalyssa Crawford, Debrielle Glenn, Rico Walls, and Kennedy Johnson. Dorothy also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
