Charlie Berlanga departed this world on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023, in San Francisco, CA, at the age of 75. Charlie was born on September 3, 1947, to his parents, Jose and Ernestine Berlanga, in San Antonio, TX. After graduating from Sidney Lanier High School in 1967, where he excelled in football, he went on to play at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Charlie had a zest for life and a deep appreciation for the arts. He had an undying love for the theatre, music, and all things artistic. His adventurous spirit led him to explore new destinations, making travel one of his passions. Charlie was a warm and loving soul who had an infectious sense of humor. He was incredibly hospitable and generous, making everyone around him feel welcomed and cherished. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people and never met a stranger.
San Francisco held a special place in Charlie’s heart. It was a city he adored, and he embraced its vibrant culture and diversity. So much so that he made it his home away from home in San Antonio. From the moment you stepped out of the airport in San Francisco and found yourself in Charlie’s presence, he would take you under his wing. He would wine and dine you, introducing you to new sights and guiding you to places off the beaten path. Charlie’s love for the city was evident in every interaction, and he shared that love with all those fortunate enough to know him.
Charlie’s love for his family was immeasurable and unrivaled. He held a deep and unwavering affection for his loved ones, considering them his greatest treasures in life. His family was his source of joy, strength, and inspiration.
As an uncle, brother, and sibling, Charlie held a special place in the hearts of his nieces, nephews, brothers, and sister. He offered guidance, wisdom, and a listening ear whenever they needed it. His unconditional love knew no bounds, and he made sure his family always felt cherished and valued.
The bonds Charlie shared with his siblings were strong and unbreakable. They were more than just brothers and sister; they were lifelong friends, confidants, and pillars of support. Charlie's love for them extended to their spouses, creating a web of love and unity within the family.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jose and Ernestine Berlanga, as well as his brothers, Raul S. Berlanga, Daniel S. Berlanga, and Jose (Pepe) Berlanga. He is survived by his three siblings, their spouses, nieces, and nephew. They include his brother Pete (wife Sylvia) and his child Janessa, his brother Frank (wife Rachel) and their children Frank Berlanga and Veronica Morgan, his sister Josephine Berlanga, and her child Renee Quintanilla, as well as his niece Lesa Berlanga, daughter of Daniel S. Berlanga.
Charlie will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His vibrant spirit, warm heart, and zest for life will forever be cherished in the memories of his family and friends.
A celebration of life will occur at Duggan’s Funeral Service, 3434 17th Street | San Francisco, CA 94110 on September 15th from 11:30am – 1:30pm.
