Anna Elizabeth Hunter

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet girl, Anna Elizabeth Hunter, 18, who passed away on March 3, 2023 at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, CA.

She was born on June 29, 2004 and graduated from Weddington High School in Weddington, NC in June 2022. 

Anna aspired to study international business and travel the world before being diagnosed with DIPG, an aggressive pediatric brain cancer that takes too many children’s lives. Cancer is the number one cause of children’s death by disease. Brain cancer is the most lethal form and DIPG is the most lethal brain cancer, causing nearly half of all deaths in children.

Anna was relentless and passionate about helping other children. She participated in two PNOC (Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium) research studies at UCSF to help researchers work toward a cure for this terrible disease. Anna also selflessly donated her brain, spine and tumor to research in hopes of helping other children. 

Anna loved soccer and her soccer coaches and teammates at WCWAA. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, biking and camping all over the United States. Her favorite spots were in the NC mountains and the Bozeman, MT area. 

Anna also loved reading, and spending time with her friends, and family, including her two Australian Shepherds, Rooney and Roxy. Anna enjoyed listening to music, especially Harry Styles who she met in April 2022 through the Make-A-Wish foundation. 

Anna is survived by her parents, John B. Hunter and Bonnie Katherine Hunter and her younger brother, Jack Leyland Hunter. 

Final arrangements are yet to be determined, but will be announced soon as the family works to bring her home from San Francisco, CA to Matthews, NC.
