On February 21, 2022 the beloved Alma Rica (Baskin-Bishop) Mischeaux passed away unexpectedly. Alma had been suffering with liver disease since 2021 but the prognosis was hopeful as was her family. We are saddened by her abrupt passing but find comfort knowing she had a full life.
Alma was born January 3, 1941 in Canton, Mississippi to Azalia Walker and Featherstone Baskin. She was a country girl with dreams of a better life. Alma attended Xavier College and earned her degree in Biology. Alma worked as a microbiologist until she earned her degree in Podiatry. As a single parent to Cheryl and Nikki Bishop she was dedicated to providing the best life possible for her girls.
Living in California brought Alma great pleasure. She enjoyed the outdoors, beautiful weather and the beach. In her spare time she enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking and tennis. It was on the tennis court where she would meet the love of her life and soul mate, Melvin Louis Mischeaux. Alma and Melvin later married and continued their love affair for more than 30 years.
In her retirement she loved working in the garden, wine, gossip, yoga, naps, smoothie blending and food tasting.
Alma leaves behind her husband Melvin, daughters Cheryl and Nikki, two younger brothers Samuel Walker and Moses Walker along with two grandchildren and a great grandchild. Alma has left her body but her spirit will continue to live forever in the hearts of her family and all those she touched and loved.
A Celebration of Alma’s life is scheduled for March 25th, 2022 from 11AM-3PM at the Basque Cultural Center, 599 Railroad Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080.
