Lorraine M. Maher was born on February 4, 1929, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Walter L., a Cambridge police officer, and Alice B.Dacey Maher, and died April 6,2023.
Lorraine was the middle child of three and was predeceased by both parents and eventually her brother and sister, Walter L. Maher, Jr. and Rosemary Maher Ave. Lorraine was a graduate of St. John's High School, Cambridge, and Emmanuel College, Boston. In 1950 she entered on duty with the FBI in the Boston Field Office as a stenographer, and in 1958 transferred to the San Juan, Puerto Rico, office, remaining for four years. In 1962 she transferred to the San Francisco FBI Office, from which she retired in 1988 as an office manager. Although she knew no one in San Francisco on her arrival, she soon made friends, including James W. Weaver, and they were married in 1963. Jim died in 2006, and Lorraine continued to live in their Diamond Heights condo and was Chairman of the Red Rock Hill Il Social Committee for many years.
While she was still employed, Lorraine became a volunteer for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She served a three-year term on the Steering Committee which oversees volunteers, and was elected Chairman during her final year. She was Editor of the Volunteer Newsletter and for several years thereafter continued to be a volunteer. In addition to gaining an appreciation for fine art, she thoroughly enjoyed her work and the friends she made at the museums.
Following retirement Lorraine became active in the national Society of FBI Alumni, and was elected President for the 1991-1993 term. For the next 14 years she served as the volunteer Editor of the Society's quarterly magazine, "The Informant," winning praise for her interesting, innovative articles and layout. She also was a committee chairman, plus instrumental in organizing and attending annual conventions of the Alumni and the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI held in a different city each year.
Lorraine was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister in addition to assisting with the weekly Sunday Bulletin at her parish, St. Philip's Catholic Church in Noe Valley. She was also a member of the parish senior group, "Young at Heart."
Lorraine and her husband Jim had no children, so she particularly cherished her seven nieces and one nephew, all of whom live in Florida: Kim Ave Roscoe, Leslie D'Ambrosia, Robert Ave, Kathy Emrick, Susan Sciacca, Marion Duty, Nancy Rice, and Joan Pixley, along with their children. Lorraine is also survived by many who were dear to her, including cousin Marjorie Kulash and Marjorie's siblings, as well as his nephew Don Weaver and wife Kay. All held a treasured place in Lorraine's heart along with her beloved friends around the country and in the Bay Area, including FBI friend Sharon Santamaria and her very loving friend Tony Dodson. She considered herself blessed to have had such a good life.
A funeral Mass will be said for her at St. Philips the Apostle on 725 Diamond Street, San Francisco at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 3rd.
