James Joseph Phelan

James Joseph Phelan ”Jim”, passed away in the arms of his wife, who was his best friend and soulmate, on May 19, 2022 in his home in Marysville, Ca.  

Jim was born to James Patrick Phelan and Lucille O'Neal Phelan on July 15th 1954 in San Francisco, Ca where he lived most of his life. 

After working at the San Francisco Cable Car Barn as a Trackman and Supervisor for 7 years, Jim met his future bride Sharon Monroy who worked alongside him at the Cable Car Company as a manager for the Cable Car Museum. It wasn't long before JIm noticed Sharon and fell in love with her and her two children, Orlando and Heather.

They married on September 28th, 1989. Their first son James, arrived in the spring of 1990 on April 8th. Two short years later, a day after Valentine's day, their son Thomas arrived. 

JIm served his children and was a great father, working tirelessly to build a home for his family. He was deeply proud of his work with the San Francisco Municipal Railway Cable Car Division and served them for 36 years. 

Outside of work and family, Jim was passionate about gardening and enjoyed it no matter the time of year. When he wasn't tending to his green thumb, Jim enjoyed watching Notre Dame Football. 

If you were lucky enough to know him, you’ve probably experienced one of his greatest attributes and that was making each and every person he spent time with feel safe and comfortable being with him.

Jim was predeceased by his wife and best friend Sharon Phelan for 34 years, his sister Mary Phelan’ Courtney, his children Orlando, Heather, Desiree’, James Patrick, and Thomas James, his grandchildren Santiago, Vannessa, JoJo, Maxine, Jada, Mia, Evelene “Evie”, and James Joseph Phelan “JJ”, and so many other surviving family members that will keep him in their memory. 

Services for his wake will be held at Duggan's Serra Mortuary located at 3434 17th St San Francisco, Ca on June 5th 2022 from 2pm-5pm. Services will be held at the same location on June 6th, 2022 at 10am and then proceed to Holy Cross Cemetery located at 1500 Mission Rd Colma, Ca.
