Inez Phillips Obituary

Inez R. Phillips was born on August 26, 1918, in Belle Rose, Louisiana. She was the youngest of nine children born to John and Ophelia Robinson. She accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized under the pastorate of her grandfather Rev. J. W. Lewis, at Christ Baptist Church.

Her early childhood education was at W. H. Reed Elementary School and W. H. Reed Junior High School in Belle Rose, Louisiana. Later, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she resided with her brother and sister-in-law, Whitney and Lillian Robinson. She graduated from McDonough #35 High School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following graduation, she attended Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana. Thereafter, she transferred to Leland College, in Baker, Louisiana and graduated from Leland with a B. A. Degree in Education. On January 31, 1973, she received her M.A. Degree in Elementary Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

She taught in the Assumption Parish School system for more than twenty-five years. She was active in the community for many years serving with the Red Cross.

On January 17, 1942, she was married to a dashing young man, Willie Harrison Phillips, Jr. They worked untiringly on behalf of Christ Baptist Church. She served as Secretary/Treasurer for more than 50 years, sang in the choir, and performed whatever duties needed to be done.

She came to San Francisco in 1994 and resided with her daughters. She joined Third Baptist Church under the auspices of Pastor Amos C. Brown. She loved the Church and the Pastor.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Willie Harrison Phillips, who passed on September 29, 1987, and her parents, and 8 siblings namely: Eva Collins, Ora Barber, Ella L. Robinson, John Robinson, II, Whitney Robinson, Stanley Robinson, Atkin Robinson, and Werlin Robinson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughters Rev. (Judge) Beverley M. Phillips, and Mrs. Willie Phillips-Chaffers, her loving son-in-law, Alvin R. Chaffers, one granddaughter, Ouandra P. Chaffers, all of San Francisco. She also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
