Welcome to the memorial page for

Robert L. (Bob) Killian

December 12, 1937 ~ August 10, 2016 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Robert L. “Bob” Killian

December 12, 1937 – August 10, 2016

Born in San Francisco to Robert Matthew Killian and Catherine Elizabeth Killian (nee Farran), Bob lived most of his life between 17th St. and 30th St., Mission and Sanchez. He loved the neighborhood and the Russian River where he spent much of his retirement. He was a parishioner at St. Paul’s, St. James, St. Philips, and St. Sebastian’s. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1955 and CCSF/SFSU in 1987. He was a charter member of the UICC and a National Geographic subscriber since 1945.

He believed in and respected four major institutions: the USA, the Democratic Party, the Roman Catholic Church and the trade union movement (with grave reservations about the behavior and direction of all four). He was a member of SEIU, Grocery Clerks 431, Bartenders 41 and Laborers 261. He was elected the first public employee representative from Laborers 261 and served six years as its Vice President. He was proud of improvements and advances in wages and working conditions as well as civil service reform. Remember him for Killian vs. CCSF and try to forget the strike of 1975.

In the mid-1960s he went to work for SF Parks and Rec., shortly after marrying Ellen Killian (nee Regan). A great marriage was rewarded with the birth of Nellie Killian (Brave Little Nell). In 1991 he lost Ellen after nearly 25 years of marriage. Some years after Ellen’s death, he met Margaret Mary Baldwin (nee Ryan). In early 2016, after 22 years of courtship, Bob and Marge were married.

Life is great, like a good party: I don’t mind leaving but I hate to go.
