Mary Frances Everhart died peacefully on July 30, 2017 at Marinol Senior Care in Pacifica, California at the age of 100.
She is survived by her nephews, Claude Everhart and David Everhart of Oakland and Brentwood California, respectively. She is preceded in death by her brother Claude Everhart of San Francisco, CA.
Mary Frances was born on July 18, 1917 in Red Oak, Iowa to her parents Pearl S. and Rose Everhart. She graduated from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO in 1938 with a B.A. in English and History. She began her teaching career in the mid-west. She taught in Macon, MO; Quincy, IL; and Kansas City, MO.  In 1946, Mary Frances and her mother moved to San Francisco, CA to join her brother, Claude. She began teaching in the Oakland Unified School District in 1947. She obtained a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from San Francisco State University in 1955.  Mary Frances retired from the Oakland Unified School District in 1979 after 32 years of service.  Upon retiring from Oakland, she immediately became a part-time instructor in the English Department for City College of San Francisco where she taught for seventeen years, retiring again in 1996.
Mary Frances was initiated into Alpha Theta Chapter (Lincoln University) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in May, 1937. She was the member of three alumnae chapters, Kansas City, San Francisco, and San Francisco-Peninsula. Mary Frances was an active member, holding chapter offices, such as Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary and Vice President. She received the chapter’s Bertha Pitts Campbell Award in May, 1997.
Mary Frances was a charter member of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Lincoln University Alumni Association. She was inducted into the Lincoln University National Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
Mary Frances was a patient and supportive teacher with a passion for literacy and the arts. She had a passionate love for music – especially classical and jazz. She was also an accomplished pianist. Inspiring creativity and dedication in others was her life-long goal.
Visitation on Thursday 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Sorority Ceremony at 7:00 pm at DUGGAN'S FUNERAL SERVICE, 3434 Seventeenth Street, San Francisco.  A funeral is scheduled for August 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 916 Laguna St. San Francisco, CA.  Reverend Dr. Tyrone Hicks will officiate the ceremony. Interment will be at Olivet Memorial Park, Colma, CA.  A repast at Bethel A.M.E. will follow the interment. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary Frances’ life.
